Dock Refloat
As of January 1st, 2010, all docks and swim platforms on Smith Lake by law must be refloated with enclosed floats.

In recent years, pollution on Smith Lake has become a serious issue. The key culprit to the pollution being the presence of Styrofoam floating in the lake. Not only has the problem been unsightly but also creates havoc for the environment and for wildlife.

According to the Alabama Marine Police, such littering is a Class C misdemeanor crime carrying a minimum fine of $250 for a first conviction. the Marine Police, along with John Ledbetter, Alabama Power’s shoreline manager will be monitoring the lake closely for Styrofoam offendenses.

Also according to the Alabama Marine Police, abandoned boat docks and swim platforms are contributing to the problem.

Assessments of Smith Lake were conducted earlier this year to photograph and inventory docks and swim platforms with white-beaded Styrofoam on Smith Lake to aid in identifying potential offenders.
